Nature by Design, established in 1993 by Suzette White, is a service oriented landscape company for both residential and commercial properties. Located in LaGrange, Ky., we have served our customers in Louisville, KY. and the surrounding counties.

Nature by Design provides landscape consultation, design, installation and maintenance services. Whether it is a change in lifestyle, refurbishing an existing landscape or designing a new one, Nature by Design is dedicated to working with you and meeting your goals, no matter what size the project. We are willing to complete projects in phases as well. We are fully insured and licensed for pesticide applications.

My philosophy at Nature by Design is that the landscape should be designed to reflect the clients need, wishes and lifestyle. To achieve this, I consult, on site, to ascertain their goals for their landscape. I listen to each client to ensure that the finished project will meet these goals. There are many considerations that go into the final design. The make-up of the land lends itself to certain uses better than others. There are formal, cottage, native and many other garden styles from which to draw. There is upkeep to determine. There are favorite plants to be incorporated as well as other wishes to be implemented; entertaining area, water features, art placement, play areas, vegetable garden, rain barrels, compost area, rain gardens, etc.

Nature by Design is a company that respects nature. We like to put the right plant in the right place at the right time. We find this limits the stress new landscapes undergo. Ultimately, healthy plants perform well with little extra care.

I was raised on a working family farm where I developed a love of plants and reverence for the land. I majored in Horticulture and minored in floral design at the University of Kentucky. I also attended Ohio State to study Drafting and Design. I worked for the University of Kentucky and then spent six years running my own flower shop in Indiana. Following that experience, I worked in Ohio and Kentucky for various landscape companies and greenhouse operations. I gained substantial knowledge in construction and design implementation while in charge of these landscape divisions.

My travels and studies of gardens throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have broadened and influenced my designs. Some of these are Kew Gardens in England, Ohinetahi Garden in New Zealand, Kakadu National Park in Australia and Kylemore Abby in Ireland.

My crew and I participate in continuing education courses to ensure that my company stays up to date. All this training affords Nature by Design the ability to provide landscapes that are healthy, pleasing, and user friendly, too.

Nature by Design and Suzette have been featured in June, 2006 Louisville Magazine. Other featured articles include; The Courier Journal, Home Builders Magazine and The Oldham Era. Nature by Design has in past years participated in, Fred Wiche’s Garden Show, Locust Grove, Oldham County Chamber of Commerce, Homerama and Yew Dell Gardens.

Suzette was nominated for the 2006 Woman of Achievement Award by the BPW/River City.  Suzette is a member of the Oldham County Historical Society, the Home Builders Association, the Louisville Nursery Association and a board member of Yew Dell Gardens.

Suzette is also a Board Member of Kentucky Nursery and Landscape Association
